"Roger was Dame Vera Lynn's Musical Director and Accompanist on her TV shows every week. And one day he asked me if we could write a song specially for her. So I thought about what she represented to people, specially those of a certain age, who remembered the war years, and how her voice had been the sound of home and hope to millions through the darkest times. And I thought about all the years that had passed since then, and how, even when hers was no longer fashionable music, somehow she was so beloved by her faithful public, and she felt such a kinship with them, that if she was now going to record something new, it would have to embody all this - which meant that it would have to indeed be a very special song........! "
